Electricity Market Competition and Deregulation in Adelaide

From the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia has been gradually deregulating. The first stage involved establishing an intra-state electricity network which enabled electricity that was generated in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next step, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In order to create more competition the energy market was split into two levels

• Minimise air conditioning use by opening your windows in the evening allow the cool air in, and shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
• Minimise lighting. Rely on natural light if possible. Turn lights off when you leave the room.
• Stop the sun from over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
• Close doors to rooms that you don't use, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.
