It's okay if you change your mind because your new electricity provider will allow you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days to change your mind and go back to your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply the electricity to your house after you change over to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor at wholesale prices, then resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from your distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be certain that there won't be any interruption to your electricity supply when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in less than 24 hours. But the switchover won't go ahead until after your current provider has sent you a final bill, and they'll only be able to do that after the next time they read your meter. Therefore, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and we also notify the current provider that you are changing to another retailer. The actual changeover to the new provider will not happen straight away, though, because the current provider will need to do a final meter reading. then issue you their final bill. Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Adelaide

Since the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a deregulation process. The first stage of deregulation was the establishing of an intra-state electricity grid that enabled electricity that is generated in one state to be sold in a different state.

The next stage, which happened earlier in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities and then privatising them. In order to promote better competition the energy market was separated into two types of entities

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Don't use the clothes dryer as frequently. Instead, dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (warm socks, beanie, jumper, booties).
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or getting out through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Reduce the use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible. Turn the lights off if there's no none in the room.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so that you only cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Prevent the hot sun over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening the windows during the night to allow the house cool down, and then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
