Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Adelaide

Since the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process. The first stage of deregulation was the establishing of an intra-state electricity grid that enabled electricity produced in one state to be sold in a different state.

Here is a list of easily implemented ways for reducing how much you spend on electricity

• A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
• Don't use the clothes dryer as frequently. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
• Turn off appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
• Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (warm socks, booties, jumper, beanie).
• Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or getting out through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
• Reduce the use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible. Turn the lights off if there's no none in the room.
• Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the house cool down, and then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
• Prevent the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
• Close doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so that you only heat or cool a smaller space.
