FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

This section contains frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and decided you want to switch gas and electricity providers.

It's okay if you change your mind because your new gas and electricity provider has to give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days during which you can change your mind and go back to your old energy provider.
No, definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor will continue to supply the gas and electricity to your house when you switch to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your gas and electricity bills, however, they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase gas and electricity directly from your distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your gas and electricity supply because the underlying connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. But the actual switchover can't happen until your current provider has issued your final bill, and they'll only be able to do that after your next meter reading. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading is. It could take up to three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and will notify your current provider that you're moving to another provider. The actual change to the new provider won't happen immediately, though, because the old provider will need to read your meter again, one final time. and then send you a final bill. Your new provider only starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that feeds the energy to your premises will continue to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from the new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Competition in Brisbane

Since the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation. The first step was to establish an intra-state electricity network that enabled electricity that is produced in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.

The next stage, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the splitting up of state owned monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In order to promote a greater level of competition the market was separated into two levels

The distributors are responsible for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.

The electricity retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Each state has between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The electricity market in Brisbane was fully deregulated in July 2016 . This meant that customers could switch to a provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in Brisbane is supplied by one distributors

  • Energex
Energex distributes electricity in an area covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the border of NSW in the south to Gympie in the north. Including the major population areas of Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.

Tips to lower electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here are a few easily implemented tips to reduce how much you spend on electricity

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear warmer clothing (warm socks, booties, beanie, jumper).
  • Avoid use of the clothes dryer. Instead, hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Use less lighting. Use natural light more often. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
  • Reduce air conditioning use by opening the windows at night-time to let the house cool down, and then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so you only heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
